Tulsa City-County Library
Summer 2022

Tulsa City-County Library
We're Back!
Hello Outreach customers and site staff!

We’re excited to share the first issue of our new quarterly newsletter with you. This is where you will find information on a variety of library resources, events, recommended reading, and more. We would like to provide you with information that you find helpful and interesting, so if there’s anything specific you’d like to see us include, please let us know!

The pandemic disrupted many of our services, including Bookmobile visits and deliveries. We’re working hard to get things back on track, and that includes making sure our customers and communities know what the library has to offer! In addition to books, movies, and music, we have a variety of programs and resources for all ages.

Our Summer Reading Program is just around the corner, and it’s not just for kids! During the months of June and July, adults who read four or more books are eligible to win coupons and prizes. We’ll be sending reading logs out to all of our delivery and Books By Mail customers, so be on the lookout for yours! See our summer Event Guide for more info.

In other exciting summertime news, Central Library will be reviving the popular concert series “Music Sandwiched In” during June and July. Stop by at noon on any of the dates below to enjoy a live musical performance in Central’s Aaronson Auditorium!

  • June 13th: Don Ryan--Best known as a jazz pianist, Ryan actually started out in classical music and was an award winner in The Chopin Competition in Poland. For several years he was the pianist with the Tulsa Philharmonic. He also performed at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, The Performing Arts Center, the Jazz Hall and on just about every performing arts series in the area.
  •  June 25th: Connie Cronley and Anna Norberg, "Flights of Fancy"--Native Oklahoman, writer, cellist, and radio and TV commentator Connie Cronley will team up with renowned classical pianist Anna Norberg for a time of poetry paired with music. Attend a marvelous party, dance in the skies on laughter-silvered wings and take to the sea in a pea-green boat — all without ever leaving your chair.
  • July 11th: David Carter and Ricardo Coelho de Souza--Tulsa Symphony principal clarinetist David Carter will be joined by Brazilian percussionist Ricardo Coelho de Souza; their unique merging of traditional classical elements with Latin musical style makes for a vibrant and colorful musical treat.
  • July 25th: Shelby Eicher and Tommy Crook--As a member of Roy Clark's band for 15 years, Shelby Eicher recorded five albums with Clark and appeared numerous times on The Tonight Show, Hee Haw, Grand Ole Opry, The Merv Griffin Show and many others. He is also a member of the Tulsa Symphony Education Committee. Accompanist Tommy Crook has played the guitar for over 35 years, and his talent and richly rooted Americana sound have been championed by the likes of such fingerstyle guitar giants as Chet Atkins and Tuck Andress.

As always, please feel free to call or email us at the Outreach Services office with any questions or requests. We hope you enjoy the rest of our Spring newsletter!

Your Friends in Outreach,

Chris, Fidelia, Jen, Mandy, Matt, Suzanne, Tracy, & Willow

Temporary
by Hilary Leichter
"This book follows one woman's quest to find 'the steadiness' by taking on various temporary jobs in a surrealist workplace landscape. Comedic and oddly heartwarming, Leichter uniquely combines magical realism with existentialist dread."

The Last Cuentista
by Donna Barba Higuera
"I'm not usually a fan of science fiction, but this young adult novel was enthralling. Halley's Comet destroys Earth, the remaining humans must find another inhabitable planet... and that's all I want to tell you because things do not go at all how I expected!"

Tips for Site Staff
To all our A.M. delivery and Bookmobile sites we would like to extend our thanks for your cooperation and patience as we all have needed to make changes in the way that we serve our customers throughout the pandemic.

Our schedule has recently expanded and new customers often ask about the ways they can place holds. Customers are welcome to make their own requests in the following ways:
  • Call us.
    • Our phone number is 918-549-7480. Anyone who answers can assist you.
  • Leave notes in your returned materials.
    • Remember to put your name on any list you give us.
    • Please do not choose this method if returning materials at a branch library.
  • Place holds online.
    • You can search materials and place holds at tccl.bibliocommons.com.
    • Make sure to choose "Outreach Services" as your pick up location. That way your materials will come to us so that we can bring them to you.
    • If you need help logging in to your account, please call us.
We are always happy to hear from you.
One Book, One Tulsa 2022
Friday, August 5th

Each year, the Tulsa City-County Library hosts a systemwide initiative called "One Book, One Tulsa," during which Tulsa County residents are encouraged to read the same book. The purpose of this program is to foster literacy within our community and to encourage conversation about a meaningful book.

This year’s selection is Circe by bestselling author Madeline Miller. Circe is a bold and subversive retelling of the myth of the goddess Circe, recasting the most infamous female figure from The Odyssey as a hero in her own right.

Join us virtually for a discussion of Miller's novel. Following her presentation, Miller will answer questions from the audience.
